As all members of this site will appreciate, implementing what I like to refer to as “the commissioning agenda” can be a challenge! You start by asking where do I start? Where do I stop? What’s everybody else doing?
In Bromley we started by creating a baseline upon which we can build a consistent approach by ‘mapping’ our currently commissioning activities and practices, before looking at our commissioning intentions for the future. We then worked across the Trust partnership to develop our Commissioning Aims, Principles and Processes – aka the rules! – which will ensure that we achieve the five rights of commissioning: “the right service at the right time in the right place for the right people with the right outcomes”.
The launch of this programme came at the right time for us as we were able to ‘piggy-back’ on the site to create a sustainable way of developing new, or strengthen existing, networks between our commissioners, providers and other key 'commissioning advisers'. We have developed a private group where members of our stakeholder forum can share ideas and possible ways of improving our commissioning practice.
