“A parent-led evaluation of Sure Start
Children’s Centres in Dorset” was published by Together for
Children on 25 May 2010. The study was conducted by four volunteer
Dorset—based mothers who use the children’s centres with their
children. Each visited a number of centres randomly selected from
the fully operational centres in Dorset. In total 19 centres were
visited and evaluated, and 17 parents interviews were completed. A
key feature of this piece of work was that by utilising a fresh
perspective on children’s centres, issues that may go unnoticed by
professionals working within the environment were noticed by the
parent evaluators. The findings show that most centres are doing
most things right, but a number of suggestions for improvement are
made. The parent evaluators have created a full training pack to
include all the tools a parent needs to evaluate a centre,
alongside a training day for new parent evaluators. A training
toolkit is also in development for wider distribution. To download
