- Supporting people with autism through adulthood (1.21 MB)
A new report by the National Audit Office (NAO) entitled ‘Supporting people with autism through adulthood’ which can also be found in our Resource Bank assesses current service provision for adults with autism. Although adults are the focus of this report, it brings to light a number of important findings concerning children - most importantly, children’s transition to adult’s services which starts formally at age 14. The report covers service areas such as health, social care, education, benefits and employment support.
- Looked-after Children. Third Report of Session 2008-09 (647 KB)
Large variations in care populations around the country seem to indicate that there is no consensus about the role of care in services for vulnerable children. The question the Government must do more to answer is, how can we make sure that all looked-after children get all that they are entitled to expect from their time in care? This report explores: the importance of a skilled workforce who deal with children every day; how local authorities can come to approximate more closely the care of birth parents; and the importance of the voice of the child and children’s satisfaction with their care.
- Your child, your schools, our future: building a 21st century schools system (2.38 MB)
This White Paper sets out a range of plans the Government has for the development of schools. Those key to parenting and family support are around access to extended services including support and advice on parenting, and new Home School Agreements to clarify parents’ responsibilities toward their child’s schooling, and especially their behaviour, including consequences such as court-imposed parenting orders if these are not fulfilled.
- Next Practice in System Leadership – 3E’s Coalition of schools. (39 KB)
3Es is a coalition of six secondary schools in the Midlands and Surrey, formed to implement and further develop the 3Es ethos; a set of beliefs and practices designed to address long term underachievement. Previously failing or underachieving participating schools, report a 20 – 30% improvement in student achievement during the period of their involvement.
- National Challenge: A toolkit for schools and Local Authorities (1.01 MB)
National Challenge: Raising Standards, Supporting Schools. The National Challenge will support schools with the lowest GCSE results, so that by 2011 in every secondary school at least 30% of students will achieve five GCSEs at A*-C including English and mathematics. The National Challenge will focus greater attention; help and resources on schools that are currently below this benchmark
- Working Together To Support Young Carers - A Model Local Memorandum of Understanding between Statutory Directors for Children’s Services and Adult Social Services (178 KB)
This is a model local joint Memorandum of Understanding between Statutory Directors for Children’s Services and Adult Social Services. The aim is to offer a firm basis for working together and working in partnership with health and third sector partners to support young carers.
- Addressing non-attendance to school with one family (Trafford) (27 KB)
A single mother had been prosecuted several times for her children’s non-attendance at school, and her
secondary-school age daughter was behind her peers in literacy, numeracy and social skills. Although the mother
was co-operative and had good relationships with her two children, the different agencies had failed to make any
difference.
- Reaching Out: Providing Inclusive Services for Families of Children on the Autism Spectrum (2.05 MB)
A toolkit for teachers and other education workforce professionals, including speech and language therapists, providing background information about the types of difficulties experienced and faced by some families, and including good practice guidelines that can be used to develop inclusive and accessible services.
It provides pointers to professional services, to enable them to make their services inclusive to lone parents, refugees and asylum seekers, families from ethnic minority groups and families where parents are on the autism spectrum.
Links are provided to a range of materials that are written in other languages.
- A Good School Place for Every Child in Brent (640 KB)
This report presents the findings of a quantitative survey carried out between 22 December 2007 and 22 February 2008. The findings from the survey will be used to inform the future provision of school places and the siting of new schools or the expansion of existing school sites, where sufficient site space exists. Information gathered will be helpful in determining which communities are more willing to accept new school provision, and what the borough might consider important in raising standards in schools.
